Why are silver items traditionally given as christening gifts?

1. i think silver goes better with the white dress in a girl's case or mini suit in a boy's case than gold or maybe people can't afford gold for a baby only joking good question
2. Werewolfs are not supposed to like silver, so the superstitious Christians give out silver gifts to make sure the baby isn't a werewolf
3. I think years ago it was the norm to put a silver coin in a new born baby,s hand for prosperity ,and evolved from there.
